Just because there is no blood after a car accident doesn’t mean you don’t have a brain injury. Always seek immediate medical attention after a car accident. Always.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is damage or destruction of brain tissue because of a blow to the head. In a closed head injury (think concussion) after a car accident, the person often receives a blow to the head that causes it to whip forward and back, or from side to side, causing the brain to collide at great velocity with the skull.
According to Dr. James Kelly, a national head injury expert, recovery from TBI varies from person to person. Recovery time can be months or years.
Mild traumatic brain injury symptoms can include:
- Loss of consciousness for a few seconds to a few minutes
- Not losing consciousness, but feeling confused, dazed, disoriented
- A headache
- Fatigue or drowsiness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Problems speaking
When the injury is more serious
Bang. It can happen like that. You never see it coming. A car accident can damage more than your vehicle. A distracted driver or speeder, or someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs, hits you head-on or from the rear, or even T-bones you at an intersection. Your life is changed.
Head and back injuries are the most common in these cases. Head injuries can cause cognitive problems, hearing loss, and vision complications. Any damage to the spinal cord can cause significant nerve damage. More serious forms of spinal damage can leave some drivers permanently paralyzed.
Herniated disks are also common injuries. They tend to be less severe than head injuries and spinal damage, but still cause numbness, tingling sensations, muscle weakness, and arm or leg pain. Whiplash is probably the most well-known car accident injury, which can cause serious neck muscle and ligament damage. Damage that lingers and can worsen over time.
